Edward

Edward Beardmore, John’s younger brother, was baptised at St Paul, Burslem on August 13th 1848.

Edward was a ‘Potter’s Manager’. He was 50 when he married Alice Hancock in Newport, Shropshire on July 13th 1898. According to his brother’s grand-daughter, Margaret, Alice had been ‘his housekeeper and very nice too’.

Alice and Edward’s daughter Ethel Dorothy was born in January 1900. Margaret remembered that Dorothy married a Mr Green of Newcastle-under-Lyme and died young, she thought in the 1920s.

The family lived at The Grange, Malthouse Lane, Barleston which appears to have been a rather grand house. In the 1901 census Edward described himself as ‘living on own means’ – helped perhaps by an inheritance from his stepmother Caroline.  £1187 15s 8d was a reasonably substantial sum in those days.
